In the heart of Portimão’s noble district, next to the River Arade, stands a building that is more than heritage: it is the birthplace of one of the city’s most illustrious figures, the writer and President of the Republic Manuel Teixeira Gomes. The house where he was born on May 27, 1860 is now a vibrant meeting place for the arts and culture, inviting you to discover its history and be inspired by its unique atmosphere.
A Journey through the Architecture and Memory of the Algarve
Classified as a Property of Municipal Interest, Casa Manuel Teixeira Gomes is an authentic example of 19th century southern architecture. Passing through the iron gate, which still bears the initials of its original owner, you enter a central courtyard that breathes history. Its simple rectangular layout and gable roof reveal charming details that have been carefully preserved, such as the twin arched windows, the colorful stained glass windows and the traditional kitchen with its fireplace and stone sink, which transport us back in time.
A Living Space for Culture, Art and Knowledge
After extensive restoration work, Casa Manuel Teixeira Gomes was reborn in 2009 as a dynamic cultural center in Portimão. Its mission is to celebrate the life and work of its patron, serving as a place of inspiration for the community and visitors.
Its valences include:
- Exhibition Rooms: Two versatile spaces (61m² and 25m²) that regularly host temporary art exhibitions, from painting to photography.
- Cultural Events: An intimate and inspiring stage for recitals, book presentations, conferences and workshops.
- Manuel Teixeira Gomes Bibliographic Fund: A must-visit memory and knowledge space, where you can consult part of the writer-president’s personal library and remember his remarkable political career, his travels and his exile.
