Mission
The Portimão Museum sees itself as a permanent observatory and cultural mediation structure for researching, conserving, interpreting, disseminating and enhancing the most relevant material and immaterial testimonies of the history, heritage, territory, memory and identity of the local and regional community, in its interaction with the world.
The Museum sees itself as an active local partner, at the service of the sustained development of the local community.
Activities carried out
The Museum hosts temporary exhibitions, educational activities, historical re-enactments, as well as historical research, communications and publications.
It is a multi-nucleated museum that is associated with the Alcalar Interpretive Center, where visitors can learn about the megalithic monuments of Alcalar; the Alvor Lifeboat Interpretive Center, which allows visitors to learn about the old station and the Alvor lifeboat and all its history, as well as the life of this fishing community and you can also visit the Manuel Teixeira Gomes House, the birthplace of this writer who was also President of the Republic, a dried fruit industrialist, traveler and diplomat.

- 2008 – Honorable Mention in the “Best Portuguese Museum” category, by the Portuguese Museology Association;
- 2009 – Honorable Mention from “Turismo de Portugal”, in the “New Public Event” category;
- 2015 – Innovation and Creativity Award for the project “Our culture takes to the streets” by the Portuguese Museology Association;
- 2019 – Honorable mention in the “Innovation and Creativity” category at the APOM Awards for the activity “Unloading fish at Portimão pier” in 2019
- 2021 – “Special Mention” award for the exhibition “COVID-19 – Special edition of the 21st Portimão Photographic Race”;
International Awards
- 2010 – “Council of Europe Museum 2010” prize, awarded by the Council of Europe;
- 2011 – “DASA – World of Work Award 2011”, the first edition of this award given in the city of Dortmund, Germany.
- 2011 – “Silver Macaw – Young talents” award, for the film “À conversa com Manuel Teixeira Gomes”, at the Tour Film Brazil Festival 2011
