Portimão City Council believes that the sustainable future of the municipality starts with training its young people. To this end, its environmental education team runs a continuous and dynamic program with Portimão’s schools, with the mission of turning ecological awareness into action.
The starting point is to showcase Portimão’s valuable natural heritage. The activities promoted take students beyond the classroom, encouraging direct contact with nature and awakening the scientific spirit to the richness of our ecosystems. With this knowledge comes awareness of the importance of valuing and preserving natural resources, not only in the municipality but throughout the Algarve region.
More than transmitting facts, the program is designed to empower. The initiatives stimulate creativity and critical thinking, promoting debate on solutions to current environmental challenges. The ultimate goal is the formation of a more active and informed citizenry, where each young person understands that their personal choices have a real impact on the quality of the environment, becoming a true agent of change in building a greener future for Portimão.
Town Hall
The Paços do Concelho building is more than the seat of municipal government; it is a landmark of Portimão’s architectural heritage. Built at the end of the 18th century, its imposing design combines the elegance of the neoclassical style with hints of baroque, visible in its two floors with windows finely framed in stonework. Crowned by a distinctive mansard roof, this palace belonged to the influential Bívar family, whose history is linked to that of Portimão. Today, as the seat of the Portimão City Council, the building symbolizes the union between the city’s historic past and the administration of its future.
